Lost is coming to an end and I am both excited and saddened for the season finale.
There have been many awe surprising, wtf, and tearful moments within this show. The soundtrack just seems to strike the right cords and the characters drive the show. Nothing on television has done what this show did. Lost... you will be missed...

I recently had another interview with CBC radio for my storybook and going in, I was extremely nervous being on the air live. All the thoughts of a whole province listening to me and the fact that there would be no retries flooded my mind. I ended up doing okay but it left me thinking of many different situations that are in a similar vain. For instance, at ComicCons, I am asked to do sketches for people. The best way to draw something for someone in the moment (being 10-15 minutes) is to relax and not take things too seriously. Once we take the situation seriously, that's when we start messing up. All the best sketches I've done was when there was no pressure (like in my note books in high school.) I guess the point is, know that it's not the end of the world if you fail. It's experience and you can only get better at it from that point on. Many people tend to take the safe route out of life (getting a degree because that's what society has told us to do) because they are afraid of failure. Don't let it stress you out. If you're passionate enough about something, it'll work out in the end. If you fail a few times, it's just life asking you, "hey, are you really that passionate about this?" And if the answer is no, then you'll quit. If the answer is yes, then you'll pick yourself up and keep going. :) *I think I'm stealing that line from someone else... I'm unsure where I've heard that before but it's true!

Hey guys!

So here's a short film called 'the White Boned Demon.' It's only the trailer but you can get a feel for the whole film. I plan to do the 'Astra's Melody' film in the same style (or a very similar style.)

Also, if any of you are living in Victoria BC, you can pick up a copy of the book at Legends Comics! The book itself looks great! It's perfect bound with glossy pages. The gloss really makes the art pop!

Guess who that is!... yea... it's pretty easy.

Anyways, I'm getting into animating a music video this week. I'm pretty excited as I haven't animated something for... about a year now... (animated as in truely traditional 2d hand drawn animation!)
Also, this coming week, a print run of 200 copies of Astra's Melody will be arriving! Many copies will be sold to personal friends and others will be put into a proposal and sent to publishing houses. And while on Astra news, the screenplay is currently being written! The style will be very similar to that of 'the white boned demon.'

So, I got my very first interview! Check it out here.

There are six shorts in total each with very different styles and stories. My film is a mix of many different techniques I've learned over the years including a very comic book take with film. I spent an entire month working on it with getting about 8hrs of sleep in one week (The other two weeks weren't so bad.) So, come check out my little film this weekend if you can! I've been hard at work on my next film for the Scene+Heard event. It's ten minutes in length and consists of fully drawn/animated backgrounds with live actors. The way the story is being told is pretty theatrical and in turn, I wanted the film to be the same.

The story itself is an interpretation from a chapter of "The Journey to the West."

SO!... Updates... Well, I've had, once again, the amazing opportunity to help out on Kazu Kibuishi's next graphic novel... Amulet 3! The flattening artists have just finished work on the book last week and almost all the pages have been colored. I must say that Amulet 3 is breathtaking and the story is once again amazing! I can not wait to get my issue of the book coming out in the summer I believe... more updates closer to the time.

Also, I've been working hard finalizing a storybook title Astra's Melody. It's a short picture book that I did just little under a year ago. (Cover up above) I've had many people asking if they could purchase a copy so I'd figured I'd attempt to get it published. I will be selling private copies of the book (perfect bound) some time next month. *limited edition! So let me know if any of you would like to purchase one.

And two days from now!... I will be teaching a manga art class at the Greater Victoria Art Gallery! I'm pretty excited to pass on knowledge of my experience in comics to younger kids, hopefully inspire them!

What I know about life thus far...

Most of my life, I always thought of ‘art’ as a side occupation while working a regular office job. I would grow up, have a family, go to the office, come home and work on art for a hour or two. But it wasn’t till recently I realized that ‘art’ is my ‘office’ job. And it is something I will do for the rest of my life.

Looking upon life as a young 23 year old, I find we all have wants and needs.

The most basic of need is food. We all need food to survive and we will do what ever it takes to find that means of survival. We all need oxygen, sleep, love.

And we all want many things; a plasma screen tv, a Ferrari, a house on the lake. But we don’t need these things.

Now, think about dreams. We all want our dreams to happen. But do we all need our dreams to happen? The truth for most people is no. We make the compromise. We get lost in the comfort of a day job.

But we can convince ourselves quite easily that we need something. Such as, I need that shirt or that pair of shoes to go to that dance... Or I need that particular stylus to do work. And we find a way to get what we need.

I’ve realized that I personally need to tell stories visually through art. I can’t survive without it and will do what ever it takes to keep telling stories! I will spend the rest of my life making that dream a reality due to the very fact that it is something I love doing, it is the only way I'll ever be happy. Therefore this is something I need!

Once something is a need, we tend to find a way.
We as humans have amazing capabilities and potential. Especially many of us fortunate in this day and age to have a roof over our heads, have money to spend on wine and Christmas presents, or watch a film in 3D... Now obviously we have regular jobs that allow for all these comforts but don’t make the mistake of turning that into an excuse.

There are no rules stopping us from making what we love into reality, the only rules are the ones we restrain upon ourselves. Never let anyone tell you that you can't do something! Whether it be your loved one or your parents. I know the discouragement that gives you first hand and it hurts.

I’ve seen a few people who get discouraged by others. They tell themselves that they’ll never be able to paint, or play like that person. But why not tell themselves that they can do just as well? Why not use that as motivation or inspiration?

I’m fortunate enough to have friends as passionate as I am. Friends who are constantly working on a dozen different projects because they love doing it.
And truthfully my friends motivate and inspire me from the work they do, the support they provide, or their involvement on my projects.

And if you think you're not 'talented' at what you love doing, I say that's bullshit. If you love something, that's talent enough.

Set your goals high. Never settle for anything less.

Dreams are life and like the great Ian Malcolm said, “life finds a way.” :)

Sparky update!

I've already completed most of the production on the final chapter of the Sparky Graphic Novel - which, originally was meant to be one of the first chapters to the book.

passion for creativity

I have the utmost respect for anyone who will constantly work at what they love – whether it be sports, art, or music.

No matter how terrible you are at something, you will keep going due to the very fact that you are in love with that particular something.

Because I am a filmmaker, I am going to be referring to film as an example.

I recently went to a film screening involving student films for a University film class. I am not one to judge due to the fact that I, like everyone else, am just a young student of the art. However, I will say without exaggeration, many of the films that night sucked.

Now I can list a number of reasons for this comment such as, editing techniques that did not work, sound problems, camera angles, and acting.

Although the films were terrible, I gladly, without hesitation, stood and applauded. Even through terrible editing techniques and awful sound, one can usually tell whether or not the creators enjoyed making that film.

One can usually see that particular spark within a work of art. It was not only clear to see but refreshing as well.

There are three types of people. Claim to fame, The Fearful, and the Passionate. Only one of these three has a chance at accomplishment.

Claim to fame.

I’ve had personal experiences with many people who claim titles.

Many are merely in love with a title rather than the art form behind it.

They want to be called an actor, or director, or producer. But they however, will never move a foot in the direction of that title.

I’ve had the unfortunate experiences of working with such people. They want their opinions to be heard due to their ‘titles.’ They force themselves into a work environment that just creates stress and unwanted anger.

Rule of thumb, if you want to be respected for what you advise, you have to have the experience behind your words.

The Fearful.

There are many artists who are too afraid to produce work. They use excuses like “I’m waiting till I have the resources to make my project, it has to be perfect!”

Bad news mate… it’s not going to be perfect.

If you want to do something, GO DO IT! And no matter how bad the end product is, keep creating because you love creating! Improvement is guaranteed to follow!

The Passionate.

The passionate will constantly create no matter what. They are not in love with a title, or fearful of their end product, but they love the whole process. They love the art of filmmaking, or the art of illustration, or the art of storytelling, or the art of acting. These are the types of people who will do whatever it takes to create and be creative no matter how bad situations get. They do not use excuses like “I don’t have time.”

If you want to do something, you make time!

These are the people I respect the most. They inspire and motivate.

If you are one of these people, no matter who you are, no matter how bad your work is, you have my utmost respects.

Hey

So Amulet 2 reaches bookstores and comic retailers in two days!
I was very fortunate to be on the crew for this book!
Since I was in grade 10, I was a huge fan of Kazu Kibuishi (creator of the amulet series).
I've always looked to him for inspiration and would have never thought to be working under him! I've learnt a lot from helping out on this production and had a good time working with all the talented crew - Amy Kim Kibuishi, Anthony Go Wu, Jason Caffoe, Kean Soo, Stuart Livingston, Ryan Hoffman, Michael Regina, Tim During, Catherine Yoo, Alan Beadle, Patrick Race, Cayleigh Allen, and Felix Lim (You guys are all awesome!)

Make sure to pick up your copy this Tuesday at any local bookstore or comic book retailer!

Amulet 2!

Sorry about the lack of updates. Life has been pretty busy and I know things won't be slowing down for atleast another month. Tons of projects have been completed since I've blogged and I will update on those asap. But for now... Amulet 2!

Amulet 2 will reach bookstores and comic retailers next month! Both books read like a film. I found that I could not put it down till the very end - it would be like pausing a movie and coming back to it the next day... that just doesn't work. The first book was great and the second is even better! I highly recommend this series!

It's creator, Kazu Kibuishi, is one of my great inspirations along side with the Miyazaki! Kazu's works always seem to inspire me and I find myself filled with great motivation when working on a project.

Another one of my inspirations is the Flight series. This graphic novel is an anthology by many talented artists! It's essentially a base where artists allow their imaginations to thrive and spark.

If you have not read either Amulet or Flight, I recommend you pick those up! Get inspired and create!

I was recently asked to do Storyboards for a short film title "Near Silence." This was the first time I have done boards for another production besides my own. It was a great learning opportunity and in the end, after the long hours of the day, I had a good time doing them!

Mount Doug first annual Film Festival!

I was recently asked to be a judge for a high school film festival.
Grade 11's through 12's would make their own little films and submit them to finally be screened on a projector in their library.
After an evening of high school film making, I was quite impressed!
From experience, I know how much effort, work, and time film making requires. It's always refreshing to see young high school kids motivated to film and just having fun.
Anyways, I'd just like to congratulate all those kids who told their own little visual stories.

Other news.
I've just completed a short animated segment for a documentary.
The documentary is to be filmed over the period of a weekend and submitted on Sunday.
I was given the job two days ago and with the strict time restraints, I had to illustrate and animate six short shots. I chose to go with a storybook look and not focus on actual animation(drawn frames, etc). Instead I focused on detailed illustrations to convey the information needed for each shot. At this current point in time, the compositions are rendering and I am about to get some rest! Video soon to be posted!

So... I've just completed two out of the ten comic stories in the Sparky graphic novel! yey!
Ones fully illustrated and colored and the other has been penciled and inked. All I have to do is scan those 35 pages and color them...
At the moment, I'm working on the outline for the origins story but I tend to jump between stories depending which one I feel for doing next...

This is gonna take a while but hopefully it'll be worth while!

Sparky has not really gone anywhere since the last short animated trailer.
Originally, the plan was to organize a comic anthology with five or six artists and writers doing their own take on the hero. Given the fact that all those working on this book are busy with school and life, it is hard to take time out and actually plan and create a short comic.
The idea of this anthology was to have each of the comics as a period piece. The anthology would start off with the origins of 'Sparky' which would be drawn like those comics of the 1940's. As the short stories go along, so do the times with the final comic ending in the 90's.

This project has seemed to turn into a side project. I fear that I may be illustrating the entire book with a change of style to every story. Given that this is a side project, it would probably be a while or possible never, till the final stages of Sparky.

Indiana Jones

"I always knew someday you'd come walking back through my door."

-I just never knew you'd be such a disappointment!

What the fuck HAPPENED!?! I can see where they were going with the introduction to this film however, it was just so bad! The amount of computer graphics honestly changed the entire world of Indiana Jones. I've tried to convince myself that the movie just took place in a different time era therefore a different look to the film... The sense of realism has been completely taken out of the equation. I'd like to see Indiana role around in the dirt once in a while. Be the adventurer you were in the past three films and not the contemporary actor doing his job on a sound stage with a green matted background and shiny lights all around.

By no means am I saying Harrison sucked!... He was great! All the actors were amazing!
As much as a hate the amount of cg in this movie, I will admit that it was not its flaw. I rather enjoyed the films middle very much; the jungle action sequence was highly entertaining!
The beginning and conclusion was extremely disappointing! Why? LACK OF STORY STRUCTURE!
New box office films such as Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3, Superman returns, and a few others, lack story structure. What happened to the flow of films? A film that draws you in, a film that you can follow from beginning to end and not feel as if it was too much or too little? Films today seem to bombard the audience with visuals and not give a damn for the good old art of 'visual' story telling.
Where is the character development? They had so much room for comedic character development just like in the last crusade. The relationships were set up so well but they screwed it up! Everything moved too fast. There was no 'adventure.' Only a feast of visual effects. This film could have been another 'Indiana Jones!'

I'd like to have hope but it honestly isn't there.

Last week, the checkerpop gang went down to Calgary as exhibitors for Comic Con.

Eight long months of work and it's finally done... well, not quite...

Even though the animation itself is complete, I can not relax until the soundtrack and voice talents have been recorded. I do admit though, I have been taking quite the break from this production. It's now time for me to get back on track.

Music is being composed by the talented Marc Junker and the hunt for voice actors will commence in a few days.

Three weeks ago I ordered a screen tablet online, the wacom cintiq 21UX. A week of anticipation, reading, and a few endless nights animating, it finally arrived.

At first, this 3000 dollar hardware did not seem to be on par with my expectations. It just felt a little too grand. However, after a few days animating away, it seemed to cut the amount of work in half!

I'm quite pleased with my new toy... However, the pricey thoughts come shuddering back once in a while.

Almost every single shot has been drawn out. As a matter a fact, 267 out of 274 shots... to be exact.
Scene 2 is 100% complete!
And test shots for the climactic fight are going really well.

I'm going to gather all the final shots together and think about creating a second trailer. Hoping to get comments on it! Critical reviews and what not.
Marc and Charles are as well at work on frames. Doing digital clean up and color fills. Thanks again to you two... you guys are awsome... I just wanna hug and kiss... and... I... I don't know what I'd do without you... I'm freaking tired! Get your work done! A WEEK LATE! sorry. I know you guys have a life. I'm freaking tired.

It's 2:31 in the morning. I've just completed three shots and all I can think about at this very moment is snuggling with my pillow and reading my graphic novel...

or

I may just go to bed.

Three days ago, I was at a comic convention... and it was the best thing EVER! I tagged along on an adventurous road trip with Marc, Marlaina, who both are traveling across Canada at the very moment, and Baz. The road trip itself had its chuckles with Baz and I kinda absorbing the cluster of bedding equipment within the back seat - a foamy mattress, three pillows, and jerry... who is a pillow however, its pillow case was a shirt... hence the name of this inanimate object... Jerry....

The night before Comic Con, we all agreed that we would awaken at 10 am but I, lucky me, did not get this message and assumed we were waking up at 7am. I woke up at 8 and franticly stumbled out of the top bunk thinking I was an hour late. I had imagined Marc and Baz eating breakfast and waiting for me. I brushed my teeth, got dressed and ran downstairs to find an empty kitchen. I got to the room Marc and Baz rested in and knocked quietly on their door. Some guy opened it extremely tired and angry. I asked to see my friends who where both still asleep and he responded with the most angriest sigh you'll ever hear.
Marc kept telling me to relax and that we had tickets therefore we did not have to get there an hour early.

We arrived seeing no line up. Marc then shoved that fact in my face. I wouldn't blame him, he wanted to be in bed at that very moment.
We stepped inside seeing this...:

This is only half the line up... the other half carries on behind this one.
As long as this line up my seem, it was the most exciting and amazingly fun line up I had ever been in!
For this particular reason:

Us three totally had a geeked out seizure.

We then stepped inside to face the world of sci-fi shows and comic book artist of all kind! My friends and I are huge firefly fan's and we immediately made our way to the firefly section.

We carried on around the convention meeting many cool artists who were intensely motivating and inspiring!

I can not say in words how motivated I am!
All I have to say is... WE'RE GOING AGAIN!
